Treasure J. Baker, December 14, 1946 ~ January 7, 2026
Treasure was born 12/14/1946 in Wichita, Kansas to her mother, Thelma Capper Baker and father, Theodore Roosevelt Baker Jr, and her brother, Tommy Baker. Her father was in the Army, so they were transferred to New York at the United States Military Academy, WestPoint, New York. While he served in various overseas assignments, the family moved to nearby Highland Falls, where Treasure spent most of her childhood into her young adulthood. The Baker family was very involved with the Masonic Lodge, where she was a member of the International Order of the Rainbow for Girls. In time, she served in the position of Worthy Advisor. Treasure was also a member of the horse-riding club at West Point where she participated in several horse shows. Treasure graduated from Highland Falls High School in 1966; afterwards, trained as a medical assistant in New York City and returned to live in Highland Falls as she worked for Cornwall Hospital in various positions.
In 1973, her mother passed from breast cancer and Treasure desired to move to San Francisco, she said, “to be a hippy.” But she ran out of funds and landed in Omaha. After staying with her brother Hubert’s family for a time, she struck out on her own. In 1974, she was a founding member of Metropolitan Community Church of Omaha (MCC-Omaha). She volunteered at Fontenelle Forest. She attended Bellevue College where she served in the student government as president in her senior year, which was the time when money was raised for building the Student Union. Treasure graduated with her degree in psychology in 1988. She had plans to continue graduate work but unfortunately, had a work accident that left her disabled. She continued her service at MCC-Omaha and also helped as a peer counselor at Community Alliance.
Treasure met her partner of 23 years, Karla Oliver in 2003, and they had their Holy Union at MCC-Omaha on August 27, 2005. In 2007, she was diagnosed with MS, then with breast cancer in 2009. She fought off cancer 3 times, but it returned in October 2024. After another year of treatment, she entered in-home hospice in November 2025 until her passing January 7, 2026.
Treasure was preceded in death by her mother, Thelma, her father, Theodore and her brother Tommy. She is survived by her partner, Karla, her brother Hubert, her nephew, Kevin and grand nieces Halia and Jael, her niece Carrie and her family, step-son, Robert and grandson, Bryson, and step daughter Beth, son-in-law Allen and grandson Jonathan and great-granddaughter, Evelyn.
