The Margaret “Peggy” Rose (Malloy) Balkus
August 24, 1948 – November 2, 2025
Margaret “Peggy” Balkus, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend, passed away peacefully on November 2, 2025. She was born on August 24,1948, in Louisville, Kentucky, to John and Patricia Malloy. As part of the large Malloy family, she learned the value of connection and faith.
Peggy met the love of her life, Dennis Balkus, when he was serving in the military in Kentucky. After a bit of persistence—and Dennis’s memorable line, “This is the last time I’m going to ask you out!”—Peggy finally agreed to go out with him. That decision began a marriage that lasted 53 years, filled with love and shared adventures. Together, they raised two children, Beth and Brian, who were the pride of her life, second only to her grandchildren, Natalie, James, Brooklyn, and Brody. She cherished each of them and never missed a chance to cheer them on at every event or celebration.
Peggy built a remarkable career at Physicians Mutual Insurance Company. She began as a part-time manager and, through dedication and vision, became the company’s first woman to serve as Vice President of Policy Owner Services. In this role, she quickly realized that decisions were being made on the golf course, so she learned to play and came to really enjoy the game. Her compassion and care for her team made her a respected leader and a mentor to many.
Family was the heart of Peggy’s world. She cherished her Kentucky roots and the lifelong bond she shared with her seven siblings—Dottie, Kit, Pat, Bob, Mike, John, and Ray. She carried her love for home in every story she told and every gathering she helped create.
Peggy was also known for her generosity and community spirit. She volunteered at the Durham Museum and the Food Bank, giving back in quiet, meaningful ways. An avid reader, she treasured her book club and the friendships it brought. She loved to travel, explore new places, and celebrate life’s moments with those she loved most. Holidays in her home were filled with warmth and her special touch. She made sure family traditions continued and that everyone shared in the joy and fun of the season.
Through years of illness, Peggy faced every challenge with courage, faith, and an unwavering love for her family. Her strength was quiet but constant, inspiring everyone around her.
Those who knew Peggy will remember her as someone who led with heart and lifted others with loyalty and kindness. We are profoundly grateful for the gift of her life and the legacy of love she leaves behind.
Peggy will be laid to rest at Omaha National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family would appreciate memorial gifts to the Food Bank of the Heartland or the Millard South Food Pantry.
