VERMILLION, Lewis Porter “Lew” 6/21/1923 – 10/12/2016 Age 93 years of Omaha Lewis Porter was born June 21, 1923 on a farm in Laclede Co. MO to Lewis Albert and Cecile Vermillion. In 1936 the family moved to the Shenandoah, IA area, living on several farms. Lew graduated from Shenandoah High School in 1940. In 1945 he enlisted and was sent to Germany in the Army Intelligence Service. He was a bailiff at some of the Nuremberg trials, receiving his discharge in 1947. In September 1950 he married Phyllis June Loop in Omaha, NE. The couple had two sons, Timothy Ray and Paul Benton. In Atlantic, IA, Lew worked for International Harvester before taking a job at Continental Can in Omaha. He was an instructor in machine maintenance. During his 33 years with the company he received two awards for machine improvements and creating automation. Phyllis died of cancer at the age of 52. Lew married Gladys Smith Webber on June 27, 1978. His family now included four more children, Cheryl Ann, Lynn Eileen, Gary Edward and Anne Louise. Continental Can sent Lew to other countries to start up new canning plants in England, Russia, Korea, Canada and Germany. Lew enjoyed a happy and active retirement. His 11 grandchildren and 27 great-grandchildren brought special joy. Preceded in death by wife Phyllis Loop Vermillion, brothers Forrest Dean & Harvey, sister Udell Andrews.
