Joseph E. Phipps, 80, of Omaha, Nebraska, passed away on Saturday, August 1, 2026, after a brief illness. He was a loving husband, father, brother, uncle, and friend, and he will be deeply missed by many.
Joe was born in Nebraska, where his colorful family story began. He was separated from his birth family and adopted by Robert and Lucy Phipps of Omaha. A graduate of Creighton Preparatory School, he met his future wife while participating in the Junior Achievement program. Not long afterward, he served in the United States Marine Corps during the Vietnam War as a Radio Telephone Operator stationed in the jungle.
Following his military service, Joe returned to Omaha, where he and Mary Ann built a life together and raised their family. One of the greatest joys of his life came when he was reunited with his biological brothers and sisters, expanding his family circle and strengthening his connection to his roots.
Joe enjoyed researching his family history and connecting with distant relatives, traveling throughout the country, trying new recipes, and spending time with his beloved dog, Chloe. Above all else, he cherished his family.
Joe was preceded in death by his adoptive parents, Robert and Lucy (Meurer) Phipps; his brothers, Jim and Jerry; and his sister, Sharon. He is survived by his devoted wife, Mary Ann (Szurpicki) Phipps; his son, Joe; his daughter, Megan (Diehl); his grandchildren, Hagan, Camden, and Bodhi; and his sister, Diane (Sandeen).
