Joann P. O'Connell (April 3, 1952 ~ April 24, 2026)
Joann P. O’Connell, lovingly known as JoJo, passed away peacefully on April 24, 2026, at the age of 74, after a hard-fought battle with pancreatic cancer. Her beloved husband, Michael, was by her side, holding her hand as she made her journey home. After so much strength and courage, she can finally rest.
Born on April 3, 1952, JoJo lived a life full of love, adventure, and deep connection to her family, community, and heritage. She and Michael were married on August 6, 1996, and shared a beautiful life together built on love, laughter, and unforgettable memories. When they first met, JoJo spent three years traveling the road with Michael, and together they created countless adventures, always knowing how to make the most of every moment they were given.
JoJo was Lakota and belonged to the Oglala Sioux Tribe. Her Native name, Little Spotted Plume, reflected the pride she carried for her heritage. She spent much of her time in South Dakota, where she found peace and purpose participating in Sundance and attending the sweat lodge. Maintaining and honoring her culture was deeply important to her, and she carried those traditions with strength and grace throughout her life.
JoJo dedicated her life to helping others. For the last 20 years, she worked at the Fred LeRoy Health & Wellness Center with the Ponca Tribe of Nebraska as a substance abuse counselor and mental health therapist. Before that, she served others through her work at the Stephen Center, Catholic Charities, and the Intertribal Treatment Center. Helping people through life’s toughest moments was something she did naturally, offering grace, empathy, and unwavering compassion to everyone she encountered. Her work was more than a career—it was her calling.
Above all else, JoJo was devoted to her family. She was the kind of aunt and great-aunt who loved like a grandmother—fiercely, unconditionally, and with endless warmth. The children in her life were her greatest joy, and she gave them not only love, but wisdom, guidance, and memories they will carry forever.
She leaves behind a family who will miss her deeply, cherish her stories, and continue to honor the love and strength she shared so freely.
JoJo’s spirit, laughter, and love will remain with all who knew her. Though our hearts are heavy, we take comfort in knowing she is finally pain free and at peace.
