Jean E. Dougherty

11/27/1924 - 6/8/202

Jean Dougherty, 100, of Omaha, Nebraska, passed away peacefully on June 8, 2025.

Jean was born into a humble home with three brothers—Jim, Gerald, and Dan—and one sister, Jackie. From those early days in a two-bedroom house, she carried forward the values of family, strength, and service that defined her remarkable century-long life.

Jean lived with a vibrant spirit and fierce independence. She loved to cook (never without at least five side dishes), garden, and care for her yard well into her later years. She volunteered regularly at the Florence Home—affectionately calling it “the old folks’ home” even as she herself neared 90. Her determination, strength, and wit were matched only by her generosity and warmth. She continued driving and living independently until just a few months before her passing, a true testament to her grit and, as she’d say, her "German stubbornness."

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Jerry Dougherty, in 1994. Jean carried his love with her every day since, honoring his memory by continuing the Christmas traditions he so cherished—finding joy in giving and in the delight of others as they opened their gifts.

Jean’s greatest joy was her family. She is survived by her daughter, Diane Schaefer (Scott), and her son, Mike Dougherty (Jennifer); her grandchildren: Collin, Grace, and Chloe Dougherty; Kalyn Wilson (Ermal), and Blake Schaefer (Jess); and her great-grandchildren: Jensen, Eloise, Raylan, Anthony, Colton, and Madeline.

She loved traveling with Jerry, her children, and extended family (Cam and Gus), creating countless cherished memories along the way. Jean was also an avid bowler and golfer. She played in a bowling league for many years and once rolled an astonishing 297—just shy of a perfect game. Competitive by nature, she relished card games and marbles, always bringing energy and laughter to every gathering.

In the fall of 2024, her family celebrated her 100th birthday with a party she absolutely loved—a fitting tribute to a woman who gave so much and asked for so little.

Jean Dougherty was an inspiration: strong, generous, determined, and loving. Her legacy lives on in the family she nurtured, the lives she touched, and the memories she helped create. We were so blessed to have her for so many years—and in such good health—and while our hearts ache in her absence, we rejoice knowing we’ll see her again in heaven with dad and Jesus.

We love you so much, Mom. You will be deeply missed, but never forgotten.
