Elton Thomas Spunaugle (September 20, 1932 ~ May 22, 2026)
Elton Thomas Spunaugle was born to Audran & Argie Spunaugle in rural Blue Rapids, KS. He was raised on a farm, the second of 5 children. His younger years were filled with school (where he skipped two grades and as a result graduated from HS at age 15) and helping with Aud & Sons Dairy. He also went bird hunting with his dad & uncles before he was even old enough to carry a gun. His love of hunting grew to include deer, turkey, rattlesnake, goose, grouse, & prairie dog. He was also an active rifle, pistol, and trap & skeet shooter during much of his free time.
He met Beulah in their hometown of Blue Rapids, KS. They were married in 1953 and celebrated 71 years together, living in Marquette, KS; Lawrence, KS; Curtis, NE (In Curtis, they welcomed the arrival of their three daughters); Imperial, NE, Seward, NE and Omaha, NE. Tom started his career at a lumberyard, becoming a manager which eventually took him to Curtis. A career change to co-owner/bookkeeper for Gambles-Skogmos which led to sole ownership of the Skogmos store. He then changed his career path and became City Clerk /Treasurer in Curtis (a job he learned from the ground up) and this led to City Clerk/Administrator in Imperial, NE where he retired. Besides hunting he was involved with school board, Church board, Frontier County deputy sheriff, Easter Pageant production, helping with wheat harvest, bowling league, bridge club, Curtis Gun Club, legion baseball & softball coach, 4H leader….
He also enjoyed following all of his children’s & grandchildren’s activities - several trips were made across Nebraska. After moving to Walnut Grove in Omaha, he was active playing ‘hand, knee & foot’, calling bingo, as well as running a small store on Thursday mornings. He made friends wherever he went, many for a lifetime. Tom was residing with Julie & Myron Graham in Plattsmouth, NE at the time of his passing.
Tom was preceded in death by his wife Beulah Spunaugle. He is survived by his daughters: Teri (Herb) Pokorny, Christie (Randy) Bartelt, Julie (Myron) Graham; sister Thelma Titus; brother Darrol Spunaugle; 8 grandchildren & 9 great grandchildren; many other relatives and friends.
