TOWNSEND, Douglas A. 8/7/1947 – 12/2/2016 Age 69 of Omaha Doug was born in Grand Island, NE to Lloyd and Aldean Townsend on August 7, 1947. He graduated from Grand Island Senior High School in 1965. Doug attended Wayne State College, where he played baseball and graduated in 1969 with a Bachelor’s Degree in Education. Upon graduating, Doug was hired as a special education teacher for OPS. The following fall, while Doug was teaching in Waterloo, NE, he was drafted into the United States Army. He spend two years, 1970-1972 at Ft. Carson, CO. After serving his country, Doug pursued and earned a Master’s Degree inEducational Administration from UNO in 1975, a Specialist Degree in Educational Administration from UNO in 1976, and a Doctorate of Education from UNL in 1983. Doug’s post-military professional career included joining the staff as an elementary teacher and coach at Assumption Catholic School in Omaha, NE from 1972-1974, an Elementary Principal in Plattsmouth, NE from 1974-1983, an Assistant Superintendent in Plattsmouth, NE from 1984-1986, a Superintendent of Schools for David City Public from 1986-1992, a Superintendent of Schools for Bennington Public Schools from 1992-1997, and ended his career as an Assistant Superintendent for Business with the Bellevue Public Schools from 1997-2011 He was involved in multiple professional and community leadership positions. He volunteered with multiple organizations, including the Kiwanis Club, Rotary Club, American Legion, Knights of Columbus, and Lions Club. Doug alsoenjoyed volunteering at the Nelson Mandella School in Omaha, spending time with friends and family, and attending sporting events. Doug had a love for sports and spent his leisure time attending ballgames or watching sports on TV. He also enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren. Preceded in death by parents Lloyd and Aldean; son Matthew; Survived by wife of 46 years Kathy; Children Chad (Megan), Ryan (Rebecca), Shannon (Kyle) Key, Brett; Siblings David (Peggy) Townsend, Rev. Charles Townsend, Chrystal (Dirk) Frey; Grandchildren Cody, Hunter, Kaelin, Drew, Elliana Memorial Mass: Tuesday, Dec. 6, 2016 at 10:30 AM at St James Catholic Church (9025 Larimore Ave.) Visitation: Monday, Dec. 5, 2016, from 4-8pm with family present after 5pm, with a Vigil Service at 7pm, all at Braman Mortuary (72nd St. Chapel) In lieu of flowers, memorials given to the family will be used in Douglas’ name at a later date.
