Clark Johnson Vanskiver

November 18, 1950 — May 30, 2015

Clark Johnson VanSkiver was born November 18, 1950 in Lincoln, NE, where his family lived. He was the only child of Eulyla Christine Johnson VanSkiver, and Ronald VanSkiver. Clark was baptized and confirmed in the Christian faith in the Swedish Mission Church. Clark was a true Swede and proud of it! His great-grandfather, Charley Johnson, was one of those who made up the first group of homesteaders organized and brought out by land agents to Phelps County in 1876. Frequently visiting grandparents and cousins there while growing up, he held a great love for Phelps County, it's places and people.Clark attended grade school in Lincoln at the then-venerable Harley Elementary School. His family lived in a home renovated by his grand-father, Miner Johnson. He enjoyed a happy childhood and was very attached to the family cat.The family later moved to Omaha when Clark was ten. Their new home was then on the edge of town, and so they enjoyed an almost-country atmosphere. Clark attended the Westside Community Schools through high school, graduating in 1969. He graduated from the University of Nebraska in 1973 with a major in history and a minor in business. Subsequently he was employed for five years by a national railroad. Clark entered Creighton Law School in 1978, graduating Cum Laude. Upon graduation he served a year-long judicial clerkship with the Nebraska Supreme Court. Clark then served for one year in "full-time Christian Service." He subsequently practiced for a long period as an Attorney in Lincoln and Omaha. After retiring from his law practice he became a caregiver for ailing parents, a job he enjoyed. Through his life he enjoyed spending time with his family exploring nearby towns, state parks or museums.Clark's hobbies and interests included historical research, genealogy, architecture, theology, auctions, older cars, gardening, reading, Swedish language and history, and Phelps County history. He published a genealogy of his Mother's side of the family. Clark was well-molded by the Swedish Mission heritage and beliefs, beliefs which he ascribed to wholeheartedly. He clung to a foundational optimism, something which served him well through much adversity. He devoted much time and goods to the work of the Lord, friends and acquaintances. Clark is survived by cousins, friends and neighbors. He is now reunited with those who have gone on before!
