Bruce M. Smith

Bruce Monroe Smith Sr. was born on November 2, 1948, in Quero, Texas. A proud patriot and dedicated sailor, Bruce devoted more than 20 years of his life to service in the United States Navy. He enlisted on June 11, 1968, and served honorably until his retirement on December 31, 1988.

During his distinguished naval career, Bruce achieved the rank of Hull Technician Diver and Surface Warfare Chief, a testament to his exceptional skill, leadership, and unwavering commitment to duty. As a Navy diver, he performed demanding and often dangerous work that required courage, precision, and trust—qualities he embodied throughout his life. He was deeply respected by those who served alongside him, known for his strong work ethic, technical expertise, and willingness to mentor and lead others. Bruce completed his career and retired in Pearl Harbor, Hawaii, a place rich in naval history that reflected the pride he carried in his service.

On June 11, 1988, Bruce married Virginia Mae Sullivan, beginning a partnership rooted in love, loyalty, and mutual strength. Family was central to Bruce’s life, and he carried the same sense of responsibility and devotion at home as he did in uniform. Service was a shared value within his family, as all of his family members also proudly served in the military, continuing a strong tradition of dedication to country.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Virginia Smith; his son, Bruce Smith Jr.; and his daughter, Kristy Varney, all of whom were a source of pride and joy to him.

Bruce will be remembered as a man of honor, resilience, and quiet strength—a sailor who served his country with distinction and a husband and father who gave his family steadfast love and support. His legacy lives on in the lives he touched, the service he gave, and the example he set.

Fair winds and following seas, Chief.
We have the watch.
