Bernard J. Stock

Bernie was proud to grow up in a South Omaha German and Czeckoslovakian neighborhood. He attended Creighton Prep High School and Creighton University. While at Creighton, he obtained a degree in accounting and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the United States Army. He was trained as an airplane and helicopter pilot. During his time in the Army, he flew multiple aircraft, but the highlight of his time was flying the Bell UH-1 Huey helicopter. He was a command pilot, logging more than 1,000 fixed-wing and 2,000 rotary-wing flight hours, and served 23 years in the Nebraska Army National Guard. He spent a short time as an accountant, but felt the calling to continue to serve, and he followed his beloved uncle Herman into the Omaha Police Department (OPD). Upon a successful career, he retired as a Sergeant from the OPD in 1986. Following these 28 years of service, he continued to serve for another 7 years as a special deputy for the U.S. Marshall service. In addition to his official capacity as a U.S Marshall, he was also known to regale workers and visitors with his countless stories, jokes, and pranks. Next to his family, Bernie’s primary passion was hunting and fishing, first with his father and uncles, then with his children and other friends. Bernie and Greg spent countless weekends hunting grouse, prairie chicken, pheasant, and waterfowl on the banks of Nebraska marshes and lakes, and hunting deer with rifle and black powder at numerous spots near Valentine, NE. Greg carries on Bernie’s legacy with his own two children. Bernie would often tell anyone who would listen that his wife Jan was the best thing that ever happened to him. They met through the LaSalle Club in June 1969. Bernie would tell you they spent every day together and were married on November 8, 1969, just shy of 50 years. He had been spreading the word for months about their upcoming 50th anniversary party. They raised 5 wonderful boys together. Bernie was a man of service and adventure. Ultimately, what never faded was his love for Jan, the boys, and their families. Visitation will be held Wednesday, October 2nd from 5:30 to 7:30 P.M. with Rosary starting at 7:30 P.M at Braman 72nd St. Chapel. Funeral Service Thursday, October 3rd at 11:00 A.M. at St. Robert Bellarmine 11802 Pacific St. Omaha.
