A. James “Jim” Fix ~ March 1, 1941 – July 23, 2025

Alan James “Jim” Fix, 84, of Omaha, Nebraska, passed away peacefully on July 23, 2025. A devoted scholar, teacher, writer, and man of deep spiritual conviction, Jim lived a life marked by meaningful service, intellectual curiosity, and a profound love for his family and community.

Born on March 1, 1941, in Longview, Washington, Jim graduated from R.A. Long High School before attending Whitman College in Walla Walla, Washington, where he earned his Bachelor of Arts in 1963. He went on to complete his Ph.D. in psychology at the State University of New York at Buffalo in 1970.

Jim dedicated nearly two decades to teaching, including six years as Assistant Professor of Medical Psychology at the University of Nebraska College of Medicine. A prolific scholar, he authored and co-authored dozens of academic articles and several books. He was the primary developer of the Human Activity Profile (HAP), a groundbreaking tool used globally to assess functional performance. Translated into multiple languages—including Chinese, German, Spanish, and Portuguese—the HAP remains one of the most widely used instruments of its kind.

From 1986 until his retirement in 2022, Jim maintained a private psychology practice, offering insight, care, and support to countless individuals and families across his community.

Jim’s spiritual journey began during his college years, when he was introduced to the teachings of Emanuel Swedenborg. He embraced the belief that the highest form of worship is a life of service to others—a conviction that shaped every aspect of his personal and professional life. In 2013, he became an active member of the LaPorte New Church, a Swedenborgian ministry, where he found a spiritual home and a beloved community.

Jim is survived by his loving wife, Kathy; his children Dayton (Teri) Fix, Kimberlee (Dustin) Young, Keith Fix, and Kevin Hirsch (Savannah); and his cherished grandchildren, Grayson, Ty, Ashton, Harper, and David. He was preceded in death by his parents, Albert and Frankie Thorn. An only child, Jim will be remembered for his gentle wisdom, steadfast integrity, and unwavering commitment to making the world a better place.

Private services will be held at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Jim’s honor to LaPorte Society of the New Church, Inc, click HERE to make a donation.
